How to Choose a Multi-Cooker
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
A multi-cooker can pressure cook, slow cook, steam, saute and cook rice in one pot. It is useful for busy households, but the range is wide. Here is how to choose one that suits you.
Size
Capacity is usually 3, 5 to 6, or 8 litres. A smaller model suits one or two people, while 5 to 6 litres is a popular size for families. Remember it should never be filled above the maximum line, especially when pressure cooking.
Functions you will really use
Most people use pressure cook, slow cook, rice and saute. Extra functions such as yoghurt or air frying can be handy, but check whether you will use them before paying more.
Safety features
Look for a locking lid, a pressure release valve, over-pressure protection and a clear display. Read the manual before the first use, and follow the manufacturer's guidance for foods such as dried beans.
Cleaning
Choose a model with a removable inner pot that is dishwasher safe. The sealing ring can hold odours, so some people keep a spare for sweet and savoury dishes.
Counter space and storage
Multi-cookers are bulky. Check the size and where you will store it, and make sure there is room around the steam vent when it is in use.
Common mistakes
- Overfilling the inner pot.
- Buying a very large model for a small household.
- Forgetting to clean the sealing ring and valve.
Who might skip it
If you already own a slow cooker and a rice cooker and rarely cook in a hurry, a multi-cooker may duplicate what you have.
