General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.

A dirty air fryer can smoke, smell and cook less evenly. Cleaning it takes a few minutes if you do it regularly. Here is a simple routine that works for most models.

Before you start

Unplug the air fryer and let it cool fully. Always check the manufacturer's instructions first, because materials and coatings differ between models.

Basket and drawer

Remove the basket and drawer, and wash them in warm soapy water with a soft sponge. Avoid metal scourers, which can damage a non-stick coating. If the manual says the parts are dishwasher safe, you can use the dishwasher instead. For stuck-on food, soak them for a while before washing.

The heating element and inside

Once the air fryer is cool and unplugged, wipe the inside with a damp cloth. For the heating element, use a soft brush or a cloth that is only slightly damp to lift grease, and do not let water into the electrical parts. Never put the main unit in water.

Dry everything before you use it again

Dry the basket, drawer and inside completely before putting it back together. Leftover moisture can cause smells and can affect the coating over time.

Stop smells and smoke

Smoke and odours usually come from built-up grease or from very oily food. Wipe up spills after cooking, avoid adding more oil than the recipe needs, and clean the parts after fatty foods such as bacon or burgers.

How often to clean

A quick wash of the basket and drawer after each use is ideal. Wipe the inside and the element every few uses, or sooner after greasy foods.

Common mistakes

  • Using metal scourers on a non-stick basket.
  • Putting the main unit in water.
  • Putting the basket back while it is still damp.

Who might skip it

If the non-stick coating is flaking or badly worn, check with the manufacturer or consider replacing the basket rather than carrying on using it.
