How to Descale a Kettle (and Keep It Clean)
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
If your kettle has white flakes inside or takes longer to boil, limescale is the likely cause. It is common in hard-water areas, and it is easy to remove. Here is a simple way to descale a kettle safely.
Why limescale builds up
Hard water contains dissolved minerals. When water is heated and evaporates, these minerals are left behind as a chalky layer on the element and walls of the kettle. A thick layer can make the kettle noisier and less efficient, and flakes can end up in your drink.
What you need
You can use citric acid powder, plain white vinegar, or a descaling product made for kettles. Always check your kettle's instruction manual first, because some manufacturers recommend or forbid certain products.
Method with citric acid
Unplug the kettle and fill it with water, then add citric acid following the instructions on the pack. Bring it to the boil, switch it off and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes. Pour the solution away, rinse well, then boil fresh water once or twice and throw it away before using the kettle again.
Method with white vinegar
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, bring the mixture to the boil, then switch the kettle off and leave it to stand. Pour it away and rinse several times. Boil clean water and discard it until there is no smell of vinegar left.
Filters and spouts
Remove the spout filter if it comes out, and soak it in the same solution. Brush it gently with a soft brush. A blocked filter can make a kettle pour slowly and collect more scale.
How often to descale
It depends on your water. In hard-water areas, every few weeks to every couple of months is typical. In soft-water areas, a couple of times a year may be enough. Using filtered water slows the build-up.
Common mistakes
- Scrubbing the element with abrasive pads or metal tools.
- Skipping the rinse, which leaves a taste in your drinks.
- Mixing different descaling products together.
- Leaving water standing in the kettle for days.
Who might skip it
If your kettle is sealed with a concealed element and the manual does not mention descaling, check the manufacturer's advice before using any cleaning solution.
