How to Choose a Microwave: Solo, Grill or Combination
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
A microwave is one of the most used appliances in the kitchen. Choosing between solo, grill and combination models, and the right size, saves money and frustration.
Types of microwave
A solo microwave heats and defrosts. A grill microwave adds a grill for browning. A combination microwave also has fan oven functions, so it can roast and bake, and can replace a small oven in some kitchens.
Capacity
Capacity is usually between about 17 and 30 litres. A smaller model suits one or two people and saves space. A larger one is better for family dishes and plates. Check that your largest plate or dish fits.
Power
Power is usually quoted in watts, with 700 to 1000 W common. Higher power usually heats faster. Recipes and packet instructions often assume a particular wattage, so adjust the time if yours differs.
Controls and features
Simple dials are easy to use and tend to be durable. Digital models offer presets and sensor cooking. A flatbed design has no turntable and can fit larger dishes.
Cleaning and safety
Wipe splashes promptly. Use microwave-safe containers, and stir and rest food so it heats evenly.
Common mistakes
- Buying a model that is too big for the space.
- Using metal containers.
- Not letting food stand, which leaves cold spots.
Who might skip it
If you mostly reheat a drink or a plate now and then, a basic solo microwave is usually enough.
