How to Choose a Water Filter Jug
General buying advice. Always check current specifications, prices and reviews with the retailer before you buy.
A water filter jug can make tap water taste better and may help reduce limescale in hard-water areas. The jug is only half the story, though, because the filter cartridges are a running cost.
What a filter jug does
Most filter jugs use activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and smell, and an ion-exchange resin that can reduce some of the minerals that cause limescale. They do not make unsafe water safe, so follow local advice if you are told not to drink the tap water.
Capacity
Jug sizes vary. A smaller jug suits one or two people, while a larger one is better for families. The filtered volume is often smaller than the total jug volume, so check the filtered capacity too.
Filter life and cost
Cartridges need replacing regularly, typically after a set number of litres or weeks. Work out the cost per month, not just the price of the jug. Check that replacement cartridges are easy to find.
Fit and design
Measure your fridge shelf and door. A slim jug that fits in the fridge door is convenient. Look for a lid that is easy to open, a comfortable handle and a filter-change indicator.
Hygiene and care
Wash the jug and lid regularly, replace the filter on schedule, and use filtered water within the time the manufacturer suggests. Keep it in the fridge if you can.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the cost of replacement cartridges.
- Leaving an old filter in for months.
- Expecting a jug to remove every impurity.
Who might skip it
If your water is soft and tastes fine, a filter jug may not add much. You may also prefer a tap-mounted or under-sink filter if you use a lot of filtered water.
